We Hung out With Poppy at Paris Fashion Week

Poppy is probably one of the internet’s most intriguing phenomena. Some think she’s a robot, others think she’s from another planet. Poppy herself tells us she’s a multi-media art experience, which kind of makes sense. “The music,” she says, “is part of that experience.” We met Poppy with her friend and collaborator Titanic Sinclair during fashion week in Paris and tagged along with them for the day.

We first meet Poppy outside the runway show of Belgian designer Christian Wijnants, which we are both attending. The YouTube star is wearing a see-through coat with pink and purple details. She walks towards us in heels that give us instant anxiety. They are the kind of heels Lady Gaga wears, but she manages to make it look easy as fuck. Later, we find out that she used to do dance routines in them, so she’s used to the heels. Poppy greets us and we immediately seem to have a click.

She’s early, so we have a few minutes to take some quick photos outside the Palais de Tokyo. “Being in Paris is very inspiring to me, I try to come here as often as possible.” Poppy tells us. While waiting for the show to start, she also explains how she admires Belgian designers. The people at Christian Wijnants kept a good spot in the front row for Poppy to enjoy the show. When we’re exiting the location, she tells us how much she loved the vibrant collection.

We go back to the hotel she’s staying at and without any time to waste, she gets ready for a new look. She chooses a pink see-through look from German label GMBH. A Parisian makeup artist also gives her a fresh face of makeup. She wants a special eye-look with bright pink details. “It has always been like this,” Poppy says. “I dyed my hair purple when I was 7 years old. At school, all the other mothers would judge my mom because I had different colored hair. My mom was just like, it’s her hair, this is a non-issue.”

I disagree

As we’re walking through the typical Parisian streets for some more pictures, it strikes us how passionate she is about everything she does. She proudly takes us through the artwork and merch for her upcoming album, which all looks scaringly good. “Humor is a big part of the overall picture of what I do. I like to make my friends laugh. I always think about them when making new things. In a way, everything I do, I do for them. I have the best friends.”

Poppy’s next big project is her upcoming album I Disagree, which will be released on the 10th of January. If the album sounds anything like her recently released title track, it’s going to be very interesting. “People are calling it my third album, but it really feels like my first. I feel like everything that we’ve been working on is synchronizing. I feel like the past two albums were more of a sound bet to the YouTube videos we’re making.” The singer is obviously referring to the infamous YouTube videos she and her collaborator Titanic are making.

“Me and my collaborative partners all love aggressive and pop music and we wanted to know what it sounds like when you put it all together.” Poppy’s music is hard to define. Some call it nu metal, which is a subgenre of alternative metal that combines elements of heavy metal with elements of other music genres such as grunge or pop. “As of recent, I’m leaving the genre open to the listener to define. Between the four of us, my partners, we don’t know what to call it either.”

No requests

After dinner, we meet again at the GMBH after party. Many fashion lovers would kill for an invitation, as it is one of the most eccentric and underground events of the ready-to-wear fashion week. Although it’s a very exclusive, guest-list-only event, Poppy doesn’t want to stay for long. After just 10 minutes, she goes back to her hotel for another outfit change and gets ready for her DJ-set at Silencio, one of Paris’ most exclusive clubs where an Italian fashion brand is hosting an after party.

We spend the rest of the night hanging in a DJ booth with Poppy and Titanic. Which is as cool as it sounds. The all-time low of the night happens when an Italian guy comes over to ask if Poppy could please play some trap music. But Poppy doesn’t take requests. After her one-hour set, we take some more photos on the stairs of Silencio.

A rough 16 hours, 4 outfits, 3 fashion events and a lot of memorable moments later, we say goodbye to Poppy. She promises to come back to Belgium soon and she wasn’t lying. On the 18th of March, the self-described multi-media art experience is coming to the Orangery in Brussels as part of her upcoming I Disagree Tour.
