Wrapping up 2022: 5 Amazing Albums We’ll Continue to Blast in 2023

The year 2022 breathes its last breath, and we can look back on this year with satisfaction. Musically, this year had a lot of great moments: festivals returned, Rihanna finally released new music, and several artists released albums. To end the year nicely, we look back at five albums that we will continue to listen to well into 2023 and are a nice addition to our list of the eight albums you had to listen to before your Spotify Wrapped dropped.

1. Ethel Cain — Preacher’s Daughter

We must admit that we discovered American Ethel Cain quite late, but we are still completely enthralled by her breathtaking debut album Preacher’s Daughter. Inspired by her conservative Christian childhood, the project is her form of letting go. The musical freedom she reveals over 75 minutes is gripping, emotional, and (at times) slightly mysterious. Each story carves out a distinct place with each listen and shows that Ethel Cain is a storyteller that we rarely hear. Preacher’s Daughter is a musical manifesto, one for the history books.

2. Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul — Topical Dancer

Belgians are quick to be modest, but they should not suppress how proud they are of Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul. The Belgian duo delivered Topical Dancer, a debut album that was incredibly influential internationally. On the one hand, they offer the space to dance on any dance floor, but at the same time, express socially critical opinions that need to be heard. From “Blenda” to “HAHA” or “Ceci n’est pas un cliché”, they created a form of musical surrealism that could be described as a true craft of art. Their worldwide breakthrough is, therefore, doubly deserved, as this timeless album will resonate for a long time to come.

3. FKA twigs — CAPRISONGS

Technically, CAPRISONGS is not an album but a mixtape, but we couldn’t let this project go unnoticed. FKA twigs released the 17 tracks back in January but managed to keep us enthralled for a whole year with this project. Besides notable collaborations with the likes of The Weeknd, Shygirl, Jorja Smith, and Daniel Caesar, the English artist continues to let her indomitable urge for musical experimentation speak for itself. FKA twigs knows how to excite all the senses and succeeds masterfully in that purpose on CAPRISONGS. Next summer, she’s said to play at festivals, so we’re looking forward to the first shows with these intriguing songs.

4. ROSALÍA — MOTOMAMI

ROSALÍA put on her helmet for her third album MOTOMAMI, as she overtly wanted to tear past different genres and influences at breakneck speed with her musical engine. From opener “SAOKO”, which will make your heart beat faster with its bass, to the dreamy “CANDY” or “LA FAMA” featuring The Weeknd, the Spanish singer-songwriter breaks somewhat with the sound of her previous albums Los Angeles and El Ma Querer. The traditionalism of the past is still there, but it is pulled more into the future on the 16 tracks and reinforced with intriguing vocal lines. The singer has set new standards in pop music with her third album and delivered an album that will only grow in stature within the next decades in terms of legendary status. MOTOMAMI seeks and pushes the boundaries of pop music. ROSALÍA is (without a doubt) among the leading artists of recent years.

5. Charli XCX — Crash

The days of looking at Charli XCX with some derision are long gone. The British pop heroine has emerged as one of the leading pop artists in recent years and was—once again—showered with praise for her fifth album, Crash. More than ever, she bridges the gap between commercial pop music and slightly more daring productions, so she never bores you at any point. Charli XCX knows how to make an irresistible song and immediately bundled 12 of them on what is probably her catchiest album to date. Crash is all about fun, letting go of all inhibitions, and forgetting the reality around you for a moment. That’s all we need sometimes.
