Interview: Ashnikko Gave Us Some Exclusive Details on Her Upcoming Debut Album ‘WEEDKILLER’

Amid the excitement of Ashnikko’s festival appearance, she tantalizes fans with whispers of her forthcoming album, ‘WEEDKILLER’. As the name suggests, this project promises to uproot conventions and challenge societal norms. Known for her honest and often confrontational lyrics, the American artist uses her music as a tool to dismantle stereotypes and advocate for self-empowerment. With ‘WEEDKILLER’ she continues to explore these themes, pushing boundaries and sparking conversations with her audacious storytelling. Right before she hit the stage at Rock Werchter, we had a short chat with the “Slumber Party” singer to get more details on the debut album.

The new album WEEDKILLER will be coming out at the end of August after being postponed. What are the final steps you’re taking right now before the project comes out?

The album is done, so I won’t change anything about the album. It’s being pushed due to admin and label politics. We want to make sure that we have the right marketing campaign behind it. I’m trying to sit back and chill a bit.

The last time we had a chat was when DEMIDEVIL came out. How different is WEEDKILLER compared to DEMIDEVIL from the perspective of being the creator?

It’s quite different. I would describe it as the older sister or older cousin. It’s me writing music more intentionally and writing music that makes me feel alive. I’m making music solely for me on WEEDKILLER. In the past, I was thinking often about what other people might enjoy, while this one is really for me.

How did you actually approach the visual aspect of the album?

I wrote a short story—two years ago—about my dystopian fate fantasy epic, and I’ve just been drawing from that world. I made a mood board and continued to write the story. Again, I curated the artists and creatives I worked with more intentionally. I was really thinking about every detail and how it feeds into the next to tell you the story. The music videos and the artwork all tell you a different story. I was really deep-diving into the world of WEEDKILLER.

Would you then say that the visual aspect is as important for you as the music?

The visual aspect tells parts of the story that we don’t in the music. They’re both as important as each other.

Is there a song on the album that nobody has heard before that you’re most excited about?

It’s called “Super Soaker”. It’s about being in a fairy circle, but the fairy that called you there is absolutely enchanting. You fall in love and dance forever and ever.

You make incredibly unique music that is difficult to compare to other artists. What sort of music do you listen to, or has shaped your current sound?

I listen a lot to ambient music. My personal music taste doesn’t have any lyrics in them. I listen to a lot of Björk and folk music—fairy songs.

Knowing that, do you start your songs with lyrics or instrumentals?

I start with the lyrics first and then continue with a whole collaboration. Sometimes, the producer I’m working with is shaping the song, but usually, I start a session with a lot of concepts.

You’re doing some festivals, but once the album is out, you’re going on a big tour. What can people expect from the new show?

Full drama. I want it to be performance art with live music, a lot of choreo, and a stage design. I want it to feel as if they’re stepping into my fantasy world.

Ashnikko’s debut album, ‘WEEDKILLER’, will come out on August 25 and is available for pre-order. Ashnikko will go on a world tour in the fall. All shows and tickets can be found on her website
