Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan Star in ‘My Dinner with Hervé’

On October 20th, HBO will launch its latest television drama film ‘My Dinner with Hervé’, starring Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan. The story is based on real life experiences of director Sacha Gervasi, who interviewed actor Hervé Villechaize shortly before he committed suicide in 1993.

Hervé Who?

For anyone who has never heard of Hervé Villechaize (including ourselves just a while ago). He was a French painter and actor, born with dwarfism. At the age of 18 he became the youngest artist ever to have his work exhibited in the Museum of Paris. In the mid-sixties, he moved from France to the U.S., where he eventually pursued a career as an actor. Villechaize became famous thanks to his roles in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Fantasy Island.

My Dinner with Hervé portrays the encounter between journalist Danny Tate (Jamie Dornan) and Hervé Villechaize (Peter Dinklage) in Los Angeles. What had to be a regular interview, turned into a night full of unexpected events in which throwbacks are implemented to give insight into both Hervé’s and Tate’s past.

Dinklage & Dornan

Hervé Villechaize is portrayed by Peter Dinklage. It might be an obvious choice since both actors are dwarfs. However, he has been met with criticism, mostly because his casting was proclaimed to be “whitewashing” Villechaize. Some believed that the painter / actor was half-Filipino, which has been proven to be false. That aside, after having seen the movie, it’s very clear that he was the man for the part. Dinklage has the talent to embrace both the disturbed, dark and soft sides of Hervé.

About Dornan’s performance as Danny Tate, we first of all want to say that it was a relief to see the actor with a shirt. (Sorry for that, Jamie…) Tate’s personality is defined by insecurity and frustrations. Deep down, there’s a friendly guy that hasn’t got a chance to reveal himself yet. Or at least, that was our impression. If we’re right than Jamie Dornan certainly proved he’s able to do more than soft porn.

Drama with a big D

My Dinner with Hervé isn’t a happy film, that’s the least we can say. Still, there’s some sparkle of hope in every scene. A kind of hope that most of the time won’t be fulfilled. In certain ways it’s just a classic Hollywood drama about a disturbed actor that can’t cope with the opportunities offered to him. However, Hervé’s not so classic situation, the unlikely friendship between the two characters and both the performances from Dinklage and Dornan, make it an interesting film to watch.

‘My Dinner with Hervé’ will premiere on HBO on the 20th of October, 2018.
