Throughout the years, YUNGBLUD built an alter ego with himself in the lead role. He made pop, punk, rock, electronic-tinted music … but the focus point remained the lyrics. If we’d only reviewed weird! based on the musical aspect, we could say that Dom misses a common thread. The total project on the other hand is one beautiful emotional rollercoaster.
Is there any life on Mars?
A question David Bowie asked himself almost fifty years ago. Now, YUNGBLUD is the voice of a generation, so this is obviously a nod to the legend himself. Just like Bowie used to play another character on every LP, Dom tries to be a different person on every song. On “mars” he uses the line to make clear that everything is possible, how impossible it may seem. weird! is full of emotional anthems. Don’t let your insecurities define who you are, is the message of “god save me, but please don’t drown me out” aka the safety pin that holds the album together.
To answer the question: there is life on Mars! According to all those healing words, recognizable stories, and a lot of love, YUNGBLUD convinces us that it’s okay to be yourself, okay to be sad, and okay to be ‘different’. Everything is possible, as long as you believe in your ‘weird’ self.
