Backstage with Antwerp Fashion Master: Victor Wang

The country of chocolate, beer and waffles (Yes, we’re talking about Belgium) also has one the highest-ranking fashion academies in the world, according to Business of Fashion. It’s the city where Dries Van Noten, Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester and Rushemy Botter graduated. Our in-house photographer Robin Joris Dullers followed five fashion masters backstage at the annual show of the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Amongst them, Victor Wang, a master graduate of the Antwerp Fashion Deparment. He presented his final collection called ‘Narcissus so himself, himself’. Have a closer look.

The collection: ‘Narcissus so himself, himself ‘ by Victor Wang

Every year the Antwerp Fashion Academy’s show is an opportunity to discover a new emerging designer who we know will make moves in the industry. When we tell you that we know, we know.

Victor Wang’s elegant collection was based on the myth of Narcissus. As the 28-year-old Antwerp-based designer carried on developing his collection he got inspired by a ’70s movie called Pink Narcissus and the dark romanticism of painter Francis Bacon. That is exactly what we felt on Wang’s runway. He sent an army of Victor Wang boys dressed in standout and refined, tailored pieces, a lace catsuit, showy hats and more. We heard his embroideries were done at the same atelier as Chanel.
